Honduras prison fight – level 2
26-06-2023 07:00
A fight occurred in a women’s prison in Honduras. At least 41 people died.
The government says that gangs started the fight. Most of the victims were burned or shot. The authorities are trying to identify the bodies. President Xiomara Castro promised to take strong action and replaced the security minister with the head of the national police. The government will announce more actions to fight organized crime and stop the security problems which prisoners cause.
The fight happened because the government tried to stop corruption in prisons, which included searching prisons to take control away from powerful gangs and dishonest guards. Family members of prisoners are waiting for news about their loved ones.
Difficult words: victim (a person who is hurt or killed), organized crime (when groups of people plan and control criminal activities), corruption (when people in power do something dishonest).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What actions will the government announce to fight organized crime and stem security issues in the prison system?
