Ice swimming – level 2

13-02-2025 07:00

CBC reporter Sandra Abma tried cold-water swimming in Ottawa’s Rideau River.

Richard Lee, a member of a local cold-plunge group, started ice bathing four years ago. After a serious hockey injury, he had depression and trouble thinking clearly. He says that after staying in the cold water for two minutes, he felt much better.

Professor François Hammond started studying the effects of cold on the body 25 years ago. Some people say ice baths help with health problems, but science has no evidence yet. Some early studies show it might help with pain, but there must be more research.

Before going into the water, Lee showed Abma warm-up exercises and safety steps. She found the water freezing but finished the challenge successfully.

Difficult words: plunge (to jump quickly), effect (a change which is a result of something), evidence (anything that helps to prove that something is or is not true).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

How did Richard Lee’s past hockey injury contribute to his decision to try ice baths, and what safety measures did he demonstrate before entering the freezing water?
