Ice swimming – level 3
13-02-2025 07:00
CBC reporter Sandra Abma took part in a cold-water plunge in Ottawa’s Rideau River, where she met enthusiasts who believe in its benefits.
Richard Lee, a member of Coldplay Ottawa, has been practicing ice plunges daily for four years. He first tried it after suffering from a traumatic hockey injury that caused depression, anxiety, and brain fog. He claims that after just two minutes in freezing water, he felt mentally stronger.
Professor François Hammond has studied the effects of extreme cold on the human body for 25 years, including its use in military training. While many believe in the health benefits of cold plunging, he warns that scientific proof is still lacking. Some early studies suggest it may help with chronic pain, but more research is needed.
Before plunging, Lee guided Abma through warm-up exercises and safety precautions. Although shocked by the cold, she completed the challenge and found the experience exhilarating.
Difficult words: plunge (jump or dive quickly and energetically), traumatic (very upsetting or causing serious injury), exhilarating (making someone feel very excited and full of energy).

How does Richard Lee’s personal experience with ice plunges, including his response after his first plunge following a hockey injury, compare with Professor François Hammond’s perspective on the scientific evidence supporting the benefits of cold water exposure?
