Is Dubai still safe? – level 3

30-04-2026 07:00

Dubai has spent years building a reputation as a haven for international tourists, investors, and workers.

However, recent attacks involving drones and missiles have started to threaten this image. Although the city has successfully defended itself, many people are now worried about the future.

For the first time, the Dubai miracle of success and safety is being tested by reality. While some expatriates feel safe and choose to stay, many others have decided to return to their home countries. Dubai attracts people with low taxes and a high quality of life, but this lifestyle depends on regional peace. Experts point out that the city’s economy is closely tied to the transport of oil and gas through the nearby Strait of Hormuz. If this area remains dangerous, it could damage Dubai’s position as a global hub.

The city is also criticized regarding the treatment of low-wage workers who built its famous skyline. While some say conditions are improving, others believe the system exploits foreign workers who can never become citizens. The main question now is whether Dubai can still be a place where people from all over the world come to realize their dreams.

Difficult words: reputation (the opinion that people have about someone or something), expatriate (a person who lives outside their native country), hub (a central place where many activities happen or where many people travel), exploit (to use someone unfairly for your own advantage).

Why could continued danger in the Strait of Hormuz undermine Dubai’s economy and its status as a global hub?
