Kenya’s online platforms for men – level 3
14-11-2024 07:00
In Kenya, online platforms called the manosphere have grown popular, especially through figures like Eric Amonga, or Amerix, who advises men on his weekly #MasculinitySaturday series.
Amonga presents his views to over 2 million followers, criticizing men in femininity-centered relationships and stressing traditional gender roles. He promotes empowerment by encouraging men to act assertively, claiming that this defends men’s rights. Alongside him, other influencers such as former radio host Andrew Kibe add to the manosphere’s reach, often using extreme language to criticize women. This movement is partly fueled by social pressures high unemployment and shifting gender roles, which leave many men feeling marginalized.
Though advocates claim they are offering solutions, critics argue these messages justify negative views and even violence toward women. Other groups in Kenya are promoting constructive dialogue for men, urging society to seek equality and constructive change.
Difficult words: empowerment (becoming stronger and more confident), marginalized (feeling left out or disadvantaged), constructive (useful and positive).
