Laos methanol poisoning – level 3
26-11-2024 07:00
19-year-old Holly Bowles from Australia has tragically passed away in Laos, suspected of methanol poisoning. She was on holiday with her best friend, Bianca Jones, who also died.
Another victim was Simone White, a British lawyer, and two young people from Denmark, aged 19 and 20, have also died. An American man in his 50s is among the victims. They were all in Vang Vieng, a town in Laos popular with backpackers. Some others who fell ill were taken to hospitals in Thailand. Methanol poisoning can be deadly, even with just a small amount. Many of the victims were staying at the Nana Hostel in Laos, and the hostel manager has been detained. The town is now less popular, as many tourists are avoiding it.
The news about these deaths has spread quickly, and while some travelers are now avoiding Laos, others are not too worried. It is a tragic situation; however, tourists should be more cautious when traveling.
Difficult words: methanol (a poisonous alcohol), detain (to keep in custody), cautious (careful, watchful).
