Since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, many Russians leave their country.

Hundreds of thousands of people leave. Men are scared that they will have to fight in the war. In September 2022, President Putin says that the army needs more men. It means that most men must go and fight if the government says so. This causes long lines at Russia’s borders. Many people want to leave for places like Georgia and Kazakhstan.

Many people who leave Russia also worry about safety. Some Russian leaders who oppose Putin, like Alexei Navalny, die. Many people think that Putin kills them.

Difficult words: invasion (when an army or country comes and wants to control another country), safety (a safe situation or place), oppose (to speak against someone).
