Many Russians leave their country – level 2
04-10-2024 15:00
Since the war in Ukraine started, many Russians left their country.
Experts estimate that hundreds of thousands of people left, especially after President Putin’s announcement in September 2022. Putin called for more men to join the military, meaning almost all men would have to fight if the government asked them to. This led to long lines at the borders of Russia, especially with Georgia and Kazakhstan, as families tried to run away.
Many people who left fear their safety because the Russian government silences people who openly speak against it. For example, Alexei Navalny, an opposition leader, died, and some people believe the government killed him.
Difficult words: estimate (to guess or calculate the cost, size, number, and so on), announcement (a formal statement in front of many people), silence (to make someone stay quiet).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
