Meta to stop fact-checkers – level 2

14-01-2025 15:00

Meta will stop using fact-checkers on Facebook and Instagram. Instead, it will use ‘community notes,’ where users decide if posts are accurate.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg said fact-checkers were biased, and he wants free speech. This change could improve relations with President-elect Donald Trump, who had conflicts with Meta before. Meta’s decision follows similar moves by Elon Musk on X. Trump suggested the changes might be due to his influence. For now, the new rules only apply in the US.

Trump also held a press conference, proposing ideas like renaming the Gulf of Mexico and asking Denmark to give up Greenland. Meta’s changes could lead to differences in how social media works.

Difficult words: fact checker (people who check if the information is true or false), accurate (correct), biased (when someone likes or dislikes someone or something based on personal idea), influence (the power to change things).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What is the new method Meta will use to determine the accuracy of posts on Facebook and Instagram, and how might this decision affect its relationship with President-elect Donald Trump?
