Mexico: Football or missing people? – level 3

07-05-2026 07:00

Mexico is spending a lot of money on security to prepare for the World Cup in June.

In the state of Jalisco, the government is using thousands of police officers, new technology, and helicopters to protect football teams and fans. They have spent 55 million dollars on new equipment to show the world that the area is safe.

However, many local families are very angry about this. They say the government is focusing on a sports event while ignoring a huge crisis: more than 16,000 people are missing or have been murdered in this region. Families of the disappeared have formed groups to search for their loved ones themselves. They often dig in abandoned areas looking for bodies because they say the police don’t help them enough. These families often work without any protection, even though the areas can be dangerous. Just a few miles from where fans will fly in for the matches, these groups recently found bags of human bones.

While the government says it is fighting criminal groups, the number of missing people continues to rise. The families feel that the show of force for the World Cup is only for show and doesn’t protect the actual citizens of Mexico.

Difficult words: huge (very big), abandoned (a place that is empty because people have left it and do not come back), citizen (a person who legally belongs to a country).

What crisis are local families accusing the government of ignoring by investing heavily in World Cup security?
