Navalny in prison in the Arctic – level 3

29-12-2023 07:00

Alexei Navalny, a prominent Russian opposition figure, has been located in the IK-3 penal colony, known as the Polar Wolf prison, situated north of the Arctic Circle in the Yamal-Nenets region.

Navalny’s lawyer visited him on Monday, and while his spokeswoman assures that he is alright, concerns arise about the harsh conditions and isolation imposed on him. The prison is part of the former Soviet GULAG system and is notorious for its severe regime and extreme climate, with temperatures dropping to minus 28 degrees Celsius.

Navalny’s allies express worry about his well-being, emphasizing the Russian authorities’ attempts to isolate him. The US State Department calls for his immediate release, condemning his detention as unjust and expressing deep concern for his welfare.

Difficult words: prominent (important or well known), penal colony (a place in a remote location where prisoners are sent to live), notorious (famous or well known, typically for some bad quality).
