New York earthquake – level 3
11-04-2024 07:00
A rare earthquake struck New Jersey, and it caused buildings in New York City and nearby areas to shake.
The United States Geological Survey reported the quake’s magnitude as 4.8, with its epicenter just northeast of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey. The earthquake occurred around 10:20 local time and it didn’t cause major damage. A UN Security Council meeting in New York was briefly halted due to the tremor. Eyewitnesses reported feeling the quake across the city, with buildings shaking for about 15 to 20 seconds.
Although they are rare, earthquakes have occurred in New York in the past, with the most recent one in January of the same year. Despite the interest generated by the event, it isn’t expected to pose a serious risk to residents.
Difficult words: halt (to stop), tremor (a slight earthquake).
