Nigeria’s scorpion farms – level 2

24-03-2025 07:00

In Nigeria, some farms collect scorpion venom and sell it for a high price in the global market.

Muhammad Usman runs a farm in Lagos with over 10,000 scorpions. Twice a month, he carefully takes venom from them and stores it in a refrigerator. The venom is valuable because it is used in medicine and beauty products. One gallon of venom costs 10 million dollars, but getting even a small amount is difficult.

The venom contains special proteins and chemicals, but new technology can create similar substances in a lab. This fact could lower the price of natural venom in the future. Usman and his farm continue to collect and save venom, hoping to sell it for a good price.

Difficult words: venom (poison from animals), valuable (expensive), contain (to include).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

How does Muhammad Usman obtain and preserve the venom, and what factor might reduce its value in the future?
