Peter Higgs dies – level 3
15-04-2024 07:00
Peter Higgs, the Nobel Prize-winning physicist known as the father of the ‘God particle’, has passed away at the age of 94.
He gained fame for his groundbreaking theory in the 1960s, proposing the existence of the Higgs boson, a particle responsible for giving mass to other particles and binding the universe together. Decades later, the theory was confirmed by experiments at the Large Hadron Collider in Cern, Switzerland. Higgs’ humility and dedication to science were notable, as he shied away from the term ‘God particle’ despite its popular usage. He helped unravel one of the greatest enigmas in physics which earned him a place alongside names like Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein.
The discovery of the Higgs boson was a significant achievement in physics that contributed to our understanding of fundamental particles and forces in the universe.
Difficult words: unravel (to make something known or understood), enigma (mystery or puzzle), fundamental (basic).
