Pets in Costumes – level 3

Nearly 70 pets including dogs, cats, and even a guinea pig dressed up for the annual pet Halloween costume competition ‘Scaredy Cats and Dogs’ in Manila, Philippines.

A charity organises the event, and the charity is called the Philippine Animal Welfare Society or PAWS, and the organisers hope that the event encourages people to see animals in a different light and to adopt them.

An animal shelter volunteer explained that they frequently attend events such as this to show how beautiful dogs and cats are in costumes. They also want to raise awareness that pets should not be hurt or kicked.

Difficult words: annual (happening every year), encourage (persuade somebody do something), see in a different light (think about something in a new way), animal shelter (a safe place for animals), volunteer (a person who works somewhere without getting any money), raise awareness (make people notice something).
