Same-sex marriage legal in Thailand – level 1
24-06-2024 07:00
Thailand will be the first country in Southeast Asia to let same-sex couples get married.
Senators vote 130 to 4 for the new law. The King must say yes before it can start. Many LGBTQ people and their friends are happy about it. The new law lets same-sex couples get married, adopt children, keep things together, and share medical information. It changes husband and wife to neutral words but keeps father and mother.
Thailand is friendly to LGBTQ people. Many people like this change. This makes Thailand the first in Southeast Asia and the third in Asia to allow same-sex couples to get married. Other Asian countries may want to do the same.
Difficult words: same-sex couple (when two men or two women are romantic partners), neutral (not specific, not helping either side in a situation), allow (to let happen).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What are some of the changes that the new law in Thailand allows for same-sex couples?
