Scotland’s Clune Park demolition – level 2

15-04-2025 15:00

Clune Park is a very old housing area in Port Glasgow, Scotland. Shipyard workers used to live here over 100 years ago, but many people left when jobs ended.

Now, most homes are empty and broken. Some flats cost less than 10,000 pounds. The place looks very strange, like the Chernobyl area, so people call it Scotland’s Chernobyl. A few people still live there. One man, Marshal, says he likes it and wants to stay. The local council wants to fix the area, but it is hard because many homes still belong to private owners.

The council plans to take down some buildings and build 165 new homes. Some people feel sad because this place has a long history. But they also hope the new homes will help the area.

Difficult words: shipyard (a place where workers build ships), fix (to make something work again), private (belonging to individuals, not the government).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What factors led to many homes in the area to become empty and broken, and what challenges and plans are involved in the local council’s effort to rebuild parts of it?
