Scotland’s Clune Park demolition – level 3
15-04-2025 15:00
Clune Park, once a busy housing estate in Port Glasgow, is now mostly empty and falling apart.
It was built over 100 years ago for shipyard workers, but when shipbuilding declined, people left, and the area became known for vandalism and very low property prices.
The estate is often compared to Chernobyl because of its abandoned and eerie appearance. Only a few people still live there, like Marshal Craig, who doesn’t want to move. The area’s decline has been made worse by a long conflict between the local council and private landlords. Many buildings are dangerous, so the council plans to demolish about a third of them, including a damaged school and church. The goal is to build 165 new homes on the site, but progress is slow because many old flats are still privately owned.
Locals are sad about losing a part of their history but also hope for a better future. The council wants to create a new neighborhood that serves the community for years to come.
Difficult words: decline (to drop or lose quality or activity), vandalism (deliberate destruction or damage to public or private properties), eerie (strange and frightening).
You can watch the video news lower on this page.
How did the decline of shipbuilding and ongoing disputes between the council and private landlords lead to the area's current issues, and what redevelopment plans have been proposed for the site?
