Sinkholes in Iran – level 1

Sinkholes appear in Iran. Some are as deep as 60 metres. The ground sinks because people are moving too much groundwater up.

People need the water to farm. They need to produce food for 80 million Iranians. However, as the water moves, the ground moves, too.

Difficult words: sinkhole (a type of hole that happens when there is nothing to hold the ground up), appear (become, start to exist), sink (fall down), groundwater (water which is underground).
