Sinkholes in Iran – level 3

Gigantic sinkholes appeared in Iran, some as deep as 60 metres. They are the result of land sinkage caused by excessive water pumping.

Iran relies heavily on agriculture to feed its 80-million percent population, meaning that there is great demand for water.

Using up the groundwater can also lead to desertification, which is when the ground becomes more like a desert.

Difficult words: gigantic (huge, very big), sinkage (sinking – falling down), excessive (extreme).
