South Korea political crisis – level 1
09-12-2024 15:00
South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol tries to take control of the country. He uses martial law. It is a very serious crime called insurrection.
Former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun comes with this idea. He quits his job and cannot leave the country. Some people in Yoon’s party do not agree with him. But they do not want to remove him as president yet. If Yoon ends, the Prime Minister will take over until new elections.
Other government leaders may leave their jobs, too. Yoon’s martial law order lasts only a few hours. Lawmakers quickly vote to stop it. They use chairs to stop soldiers from coming into their building.
Difficult words: martial law (when soldiers control the country), quit (to stop), remove (to take away).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
Who would take over if President Yoon Suk Yeol were to be removed from his position?
