South Korea political crisis – level 2
09-12-2024 15:00
Authorities are investigating South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol for trying to use martial law to take control of the country.
Former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, who suggested martial law, resigned and cannot leave the country. Yoon’s party doesn’t want impeachment, but some members don’t agree. If it happens, the Prime Minister will lead South Korea until the new elections.
Yoon accepted Defense Minister Kim’s resignation and chose Choi Byung-hyuk to replace him. Other ministers may also quit. Yoon’s martial law lasted only a few hours. Lawmakers quickly voted to stop it and blocked soldiers from entering their building with furniture.
Difficult words: martial law (when the military controls the country), impeachment (removing a leader of a country), resignation (leaving a job).

Who was chosen to replace the former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun after his resignation?
