Spain’s first transgender soccer team – level 2
08-10-2024 15:00
Spain’s first transgender soccer team, Fenix FC, played its first game in a regional men’s league.
The team consists only of transgender men. They played friendly games before, but now they are part of the fifth division in Catalonia. This is important because transgender people still face a lot of discrimination. In 2023, there were 302 cases of violence or discrimination against LGBT people in Catalonia, many of them aimed at transgender people. Hugo Martinez, the team’s creator, had a hard time when he started his gender change. It made him want to create a safe place for trans men to play soccer.
The team’s first official match ended with a 19-0 loss, but the players are more focused on being able to play freely. The Catalan Football Association said players of any gender can join men’s leagues.
Difficult words: transgender (someone whose gender doesn’t match their birth gender), discrimination (unfair treatment), aim (to point or direct at a target).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What is the significance of Fenix FC's participation in the fifth division in Catalonia, and how does it relate to the discrimination faced by transgender people in the region?
