Teachers in Mexico protest – level 3
23-03-2026 07:00
Thousands of teachers in Mexico City started a 72-hour national strike to demand better working conditions.
The protesters marched from the Angel of Independence to the Zócalo, which is the main square of the capital. They want a salary increase and the repeal of specific laws that affect their pensions and careers. The teachers feel that the government hasn’t kept its promises to help them. The leaders of the teachers’ union announced that they will continue their fight if the president doesn’t talk to them. They even mentioned that they might organize more protests during the World Cup to get more attention.
At the moment, teachers in more than 20 states are taking part in different actions, such as blocking roads and taking over government buildings. After their march, the teachers planned to set up a camp in the square and visit several embassies. They want to show that they are organized and ready for a long struggle to protect their rights.
Difficult words: demand (a very strong statement where you say that you must have something or that something must happen), repeal (the act of officially ending a law), union (an organized group of workers who join together to talk to their boss about better pay and better working conditions).

How did the teachers’ union leaders propose to escalate their protest if the president refused to meet with them?
