The Brazilian president is in hospital – level 3

16-12-2024 07:00

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is recovering in intensive care following emergency brain surgery to treat an intracranial hemorrhage caused by a fall in October.

The 79-year-old leader, who underwent a two-hour operation at Sirio-Libanês Hospital in São Paulo, is in stable condition and showing no signs of neurological complications. Doctors report that Lula is speaking and eating normally and expect him to remain in intensive care for 48 hours. Lula’s health has been closely monitored since his October injury, which required stitches after he fell at home. His recent worsening headaches prompted a swift medical response, leading to the detection of the hemorrhage through a scan.

The incident raises concerns about Lula’s fitness to complete his term or run for reelection in 2026. Vice President Geraldo Alckmin has taken over Lula’s official duties for now.

Difficult words: intracranial hemorrhage (bleeding inside the skull), prompt (to cause), detection (discovering or noticing something).
