The EU warns of a war in Lebanon – level 2

30-09-2024 15:00

Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy chief, said the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah is almost a full war.

He explained that it is very dangerous. Many civilians are getting hurt or killed. Israeli airstrikes killed over 490 people, including 35 children, and many more had to leave their homes. Borrell criticized Israel’s actions. He said that civilians are paying a too high price. Israel’s defense minister said that they will continue the attacks until people in northern Israel are safe.

Borrell called for urgent diplomatic talks to stop the situation from becoming a bigger war. He also said that Europe is afraid that the conflict may spread to other regions, which is already happening.

Difficult words: airstrike (an attack by a plane), criticize (to say that something is wrong), urgent (very important), diplomatic talk (a formal discussion between people from different countries or businesses).

What concerns did Josep Borrell express about the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, and what actions did he suggest to mitigate the situation?
