The Iranian football team does not have a visa – level 3

25-05-2026 15:00

There is still uncertainty about Iran’s participation in the upcoming men’s football World Cup in the United States.

The Iranian national team is currently in Turkey making final preparations, but officials are working hard behind the scenes to get the necessary travel visas.

According to FIFA protocols, host countries are obliged to provide visas to all participating teams, as this is a legal requirement for the US government. Although Iran is affected by strict US travel bans, players and coaches are supposed to be exempt from World Cup events.

US President Donald Trump stated he is fine with Iran competing, and FIFA officials described recent meetings with Iran as positive. FIFA’s president emphasized that the tournament should be a moment of unity and hope, despite the ongoing political tensions between the two nations. The Iranian team is hoping for a quick solution during their visa appointments at the US embassy in Ankara.

Difficult words: participation (taking part), behind the scenes (down out of sight of the public, secret or private activity), exempt (free from an obligation or a rule that applies to others).
