Tourism makes living in Barcelona too expensive – level 2
15-04-2025 07:00
In Barcelona, tourism makes housing very expensive. Many people cannot pay for rent anymore.
The city wants to stop tourist apartments in 2028. People like Alicia and Nadia say that housing is too costly now. Nadia lost her apartment because the owner wanted to rent it to tourists. She now lives in a small place made from shipping containers.
Many landlords rent homes to tourists who pay more money. This is a big problem for people who don’t earn that much money. The city is making special homes where rent doesn’t go up. Alicia lives in one of these homes and is happy to pay less.
Barcelona still wants tourists to come. But the city also wants to help local people stay in their homes and live better.
Difficult words: costly (expensive), shipping container (a large metal box which people use to store things or to live in), landlord (a person who rents out homes).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
How did Nadia and Alicia’s experiences differ when dealing with changes in tourist rentals, and what measures has the city taken to support residents?
