Trump wants Greenland – level 3
22-01-2025 07:00
Greenland is closely following US developments after President Trump proposed buying the island. He claimed it would help American national security, especially against China and Russia.
However, Greenland is self-governing and remains part of Denmark. Many Greenlanders oppose the idea, seeing it as offensive. They believe Greenland is not for sale.
Trump is interested in Greenland’s vast resources, such as minerals and fishing opportunities. Greenland’s economy depends heavily on fishing, which makes up over 90% of its exports, and most people work in government jobs. Denmark supports Greenland with nearly 1 billion dollars annually, but some Greenlanders think they could survive independently by using their resources wisely.
Debates about independence have increased in recent years, with many people wanting Greenland to manage its future. If independence happens, it might bring new challenges, like dealing with larger nations trying to exploit Greenland’s resources. However, Denmark has made it clear that selling Greenland is not an option.
Difficult words: offensive (disrespectful), vast (of a very great extent or quantity), exploit (to make use of a situation in a way considered unfair).
