US Vice President speaks about EU politics – level 2
18-02-2025 15:00
At the Munich Security Conference, US Vice President JD Vance said free speech in Europe is under threat. He also said that European voters never wanted large numbers of migrants to enter their countries.
His speech shocked many European leaders, especially in Germany. Vance argued that stopping free speech is more dangerous for democracy than Russian military actions. Some believe his words were a response to European criticism of the MAGA movement. He also seemed to support far-right parties in Europe, saying governments should not exclude them. German leaders strongly disagreed with him.
Vence’s speech may create more problems between the US and Europe, especially before Germany’s elections. Some people ignored his comments, but others think they show growing disagreements between Europe and the US.
Difficult words: threat (danger), response (an answer), exclude (not to be part of something).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What potential challenges might arise between the US and Europe as a result of the contrasting reactions to Vance's defense of free speech and support for far-right political parties, especially considering the upcoming elections in Germany?
