Islamic State laid many mines and other bombs in fields in northern Iraq. These bombs are still killing people, and they make it hard for farmers to grow crops.

Asmaa Khalil and five other women decided to clear the fields. At first, it was very difficult, and the women were scared of the bombs. They divided a field into several parts, and they cleared the parts one by one.  After a month or two, the work became easier because the women learned how to do it well and safely.

The women had another problem, too. They had to follow military rules because officials think that this work is military work. The women couldn’t tell anyone what they did because it was unusual for Iraqi women to do this work.

Difficult words: mine (a type of bomb which explodes when someone or something touches it), crops (plants which farmers grow and sell), military (the soldiers or the army).
