Australia’s surfing industry and nature – level 2

27-09-2024 07:00

A new study from the Australian National University says that surfing brings about 2 billion dollars into Australia’s economy every year. But surf breaks, the areas where waves form, are at risk.

Things like climate change and coastal erosion make the waves weaker, and more need for space near the coast makes it worse. While countries like New Zealand and Peru have laws to protect surfing areas, Australia hasn’t. Surfing is very popular in Australia and has social and economic value. Tourists and locals love to surf, and many businesses near the beaches benefit from this. From beginners to professionals, surfing is a big part of life in Australia, and people enjoy the connection it gives them to nature.

Difficult words: form (to make or create), erosion (the slow destruction of land by wind and water), value (when something is very important or useful).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are some of the factors threatening surf breaks in Australia and how does this impact the country's economy and social life?
