Early digital art – level 2

02-12-2024 07:00

The Electric Dreams exhibition at Tate Modern in London celebrates the early days of digital art and shows works from the 1950s to the 1990s.

Artists used machines and programs to create art, but many felt unsure about technology’s effects. This is still a big topic today, as AI brings questions about creativity. One early example is Harold Cohen’s simple abstract shapes. People thought of it as a passing trend. Another example is Palestinian artist Samia Halaby’s 1980s paintings that she made with a home computer. Halaby’s work links art to social problems.

Some of the technology first came from the military. Artists used it to create things rather than destroy them.

Difficult words: exhibition (a public display of art or other things), creativity (using your ideas to create something), abstract (not realistic, often using shapes or colors).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are some examples of early digital art and how did artists use technology to create these works?
