The Electric Dreams exhibition at London’s Tate Modern celebrates the pioneers of digital art from the 1950s to the 1990s and explores the relationship between art and technology.

The exhibition shows 150 works with artists using machines and algorithms to create art.

The exhibition highlights early examples of machine-made art, like Harold Cohen’s abstract shapes, once dismissed as a fad. It also includes innovative paintings by Palestinian artist Samia Halaby, created on her home computer in the 1980s. Halaby’s work reflects her thoughts on contested lands, such as Palestine, showing how art intersects with social issues. Many technologies used in these artworks originally served military purposes. Instead of destruction, artists transformed them into tools for creation and offered a fresh perspective of technology in art.

Artists had mixed feelings about technology’s positive and negative impacts, a sentiment that remains as debates around artificial intelligence and creativity intensify.
