England manager quits – level 3

22-07-2024 07:00

England manager Gareth Southgate has resigned following a second consecutive European Championship final defeat.

England lost 2-1 to Spain in Berlin, after losing to Italy on penalties three years earlier. 53-year-old Southgate managed England for 102 games over eight years. He announced his resignation but called it the honor of his life to lead the team. After the match, he said it was not the time to decide on his future, but now, he has decided to step down.

Southgate has had a successful tenure, reaching the semi-final of the 2018 World Cup and two European Championship finals. However, he faced criticism for England’s performance in the 2024 Euros. In his resignation statement, Southgate expressed pride in his players and gratitude to his staff. He hopes the team will continue to succeed and inspire the nation.

Difficult words: consecutive (one after another), tenure (the period someone holds a job), gratitude (being thankful and appreciative).
