Ethiopia – Eritrea conflict – level 1

Ethiopia and Eritrea might fight again, officials say. If they do, many people in the Horn of Africa will suffer.
The problem starts after a war in Ethiopia’s Tigray region. The war starts in 2020 and lasts two years. Eritrea helps Ethiopia fight a group called TPLF. After the war, Ethiopia makes peace with Tigray, but Eritrea is not part of the deal. Now, some people in Tigray are fighting again. Ethiopia and Eritrea may take different sides. Both countries are sending soldiers to the border.
Eritrea becomes free from Ethiopia in 1993. They fight again in 1998 but make peace in 2018. Now, they are not friends because Ethiopia makes peace with Tigray. Ethiopia also wants to get to the sea, which Eritrea does not like.
Difficult words: suffer (to go through something unpleasant or bad), peace (when there is not a war or conflict), border (the line between two countries).
