Ethiopia – Eritrea conflict – level 3

19-03-2025 07:00

Ethiopia and Eritrea, former enemies, may be on the brink of war again, according to regional officials.

This conflict would destroy the peace agreement that earned Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019 and could worsen the humanitarian crisis in the Horn of Africa.

Tensions rose after the 2020-2022 civil war in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, where Eritrea supported Ethiopia’s federal army against the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). However, the peace deal signed in 2022 excluded Eritrea, leading to a split between Ethiopia and Eritrea. A faction in Tigray recently took control of Adigrat, which increased instability in the region. Both Ethiopia and Eritrea have deployed troops, raising concerns of direct conflict.

Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993 after years of war. The two nations fought again in 1998 but reconciled in 2018. However, their relationship deteriorated after Ethiopia’s peace agreement with the TPLF. Eritrea is also alarmed by Ethiopia’s growing interest in gaining sea access.

Difficult words: faction (a small group within a larger group), reconcile (to restore friendly relations), deteriorate (to become worse).

How might the exclusion of Eritrea from the 2022 peace deal and the recent control of Adigrat influence the future of the peace accord that earned Ethiopia’s Prime Minister a Nobel Peace Prize, as well as the broader regional stability?
