Greece has little water – level 3
09-09-2024 15:00
In Greece, Lake Mornos, a crucial water source for nearly half of the population, has significantly decreased in size due to extreme weather conditions.
After a winter with little snow and a summer of intense heatwaves and drought, the lake has shrunk to its lowest level in decades. As the water recedes, the remains of the village of Kallio submerged since 1980 to create the reservoir have started to resurface. The cracked soil and ruined buildings now stand as a reminder of the village that once existed. Scientists attribute the lake’s decline to climate change, which has worsened the arid Mediterranean climate and increased the likelihood of extreme weather events, such as wildfires near Athens.
Local authorities and experts warn that if the upcoming winter is also dry, the situation could become even more critical. They say it is necessary to address the effects of global warming.
Difficult words: crucial (very important), recede (to move back or away), arid (very dry and without enough rain for plants).
