Greece wildfires – level 3

19-08-2024 07:00

Several EU countries, including France and Italy, are assisting Greece as it battles wildfires spreading towards Athens.

Firefighters found a woman’s body in a burned factory in an Athens suburb, and many people have been injured as the fires rapidly spread. The situation is critical. Firefighters are no longer facing a single fire but multiple blazes across various areas. Entire neighborhoods north of Athens have been evacuated, and residents watched helplessly as flames destroyed their homes. Strong winds and dry conditions have made it difficult to control the fires, with some flames reaching over 25 meters high. The fire has already burned through about 10,000 hectares of land.

EU countries are sending equipment and assistance, including helicopters and ground troops, to help Greek authorities. The Greek government has faced criticism for not being better prepared despite efforts to control vegetation and setting up firebreaks.

Difficult words: vegetation (plants), firebreak (a trip of open space in a forest to stop fire).
