Hungary protest – level 3
10-10-2024 07:00
Thousands of protesters gathered in Budapest outside the offices of Hungary’s public media corporation, MTVA, to demand greater press freedom.
The protest, organized by opposition leader Péter Magyar of the TISZA party, was directed against what critics call a ‘propaganda factory’ that serves the government. Magyar, who leads the most significant opposition to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, said the public media spreads lies and distorts the truth. His party received nearly 30% of the vote in recent EU elections and is growing in popularity.
Media watchdogs claim that Orbán’s party controls 80% of Hungary’s media market, threatening press freedom. Protesters like Balázs Tömpe and Ágnes Gera expressed anger over media bias and censorship.
Magyar called for the resignation of the public media director and urged people to attend another protest on October 23 to continue the fight for media reform.
Difficult words: distort (to give misleading or false information or impression), watchdog (an organization that guards against loss, theft, or undesirable practices), bias (supporting or opposing a particular person or thing unfairly).
