LA fires – level 3
14-01-2025 07:00
In Los Angeles, wildfires have killed at least 10 people, displaced around 180,000 residents, and left neighborhoods unrecognizable.
Officials describe the devastation as apocalyptic, with thousands of homes destroyed and damages estimated between 135 and 150 billion dollars. Fierce winds, which helped spread the flames, have temporarily subsided, allowing firefighters some relief. However, new fires are emerging, with one believed to have been started intentionally. A suspect is under investigation. Helicopters and planes are dropping water and fire retardants, but the winds complicate efforts.
Residents returning to their neighborhoods often find their homes reduced to ashes. The fires have affected all kinds of communities, from mansions to modest homes. Many people attribute the scale of the disaster to climate change. Meanwhile, President Biden has pledged federal support, and additional firefighters and equipment are being deployed to control the flames. Many fires remain uncontained, leaving communities fearful of worsening conditions.
Difficult words: apocalyptic (looking or feeling like the end of the world), subside (to become less intense or violent), retardant (a substance that slows down something), uncontained (not under control).
