10-09-2024 15:00
Rebecca Cheptegei, a 33-year-old Ugandan marathon runner, died after her ex-boyfriend attacked her.
He poured petrol on her and set her on fire. The attack happened in Kenya after she returned from church with her daughters. Cheptegei was badly burned and died four days later in the hospital due to her injuries. Her ex-boyfriend is also in the hospital with burns. Since 2021, three female athletes died, which raised concerns about the safety of women athletes.
Cheptegei started running for Uganda in 2010. She won a gold medal in mountain running in 2022 and competed in the Paris Olympics. People who knew her said she was a kind and friendly person.
Difficult words: pour (to make something flow from a container), burned (hurt by heat or fire), concern (a worried or nervous feeling about something).
