Olympic marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei has tragically passed away after being attacked by her former boyfriend.

The 33-year-old Ugandan athlete, who competed in the Paris Olympics, suffered severe burns after being doused with petrol and set on fire in Kenya. She died four days later due to organ failure caused by burns covering over 70% of her body. The attack occurred when she returned from church with her two daughters. Her ex-boyfriend, who also sustained burns, is being treated in the ICU. Authorities are investigating the incident, raising concerns about the rising violence against female athletes, particularly in Kenya. Cheptegei began competing in 2010, representing Uganda in various competitions. She won a gold medal in a mountain running event in 2022 and lived and trained in Kenya, a region famous for producing top athletes. Her death has shocked the athletic community, who remember her as a friendly and talented person.

Difficult words: doused (to be covered with liquid), ICU (intensive care unit in a hospital).
