No more US money for Radio Free Europe – level 1

21-03-2025 07:00

The US stops giving money to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL).

The EU wants to help. RFE/RL gives important news. It works in Prague, the Czech Republic, since the Cold War. It speaks 27 languages. It reports in Ukraine, where Russia takes some land. Last Friday, Donald Trump stops some funding. The boss of RFE/RL, Stephen Capus, said this helps America’s enemies.

The Czech Republic wants the EU to help RFE/RL. Sweden also says the radio is important to keep countries and people free. An EU leader, Kaja Kallas, said finding money is difficult because many groups need help. But EU ministers want to try.

Difficult words: report (to give information about something), funding (money for a project), enemy (somebody you fight with).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Why is the organization seen as crucial for information in multiple languages, and what funding challenges does it currently face?
