No more US money for Radio Free Europe – level 2
21-03-2025 07:00
The EU is trying to help Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) after the US stopped funding it. RFE/RL is important for sharing news since the Cold War.
It broadcasts in 27 languages and reports on places like Ukraine, where it covers Russian-occupied areas. Last Friday, Donald Trump ordered funding cuts, which affected RFE/RL. The head of the network, Stephen Capus, said this would help America’s enemies. RFE/RL started working in the Czech Republic 25 years ago. The Czech government wants the EU to give money to support it. Sweden agrees and says the network helps democracy. Some leaders say that it is hard to find money because many groups ask for help. Still, EU ministers want to find a way to save the network.
Difficult words: funding (money for a project), broadcast (to transmit a program or some information by radio or television), enemy (a person who hates or fights with someone else).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
How does the decision by Donald Trump to cut funding affect the network's ability to report from places like Ukraine, and what positions do the Czech government and Sweden take regarding support for RFE/RL?
