No more US money for Radio Free Europe – level 3

21-03-2025 07:00

The European Union is discussing ways to support Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) after the Trump administration cut its funding.

RFE/RL has been an essential source of information since the Cold War, broadcasting in 27 languages across 23 countries, including Ukraine, where it covers Russian-occupied territories. Last Friday, after Congress passed a government funding bill, Trump ordered reductions to several agencies, including the US Global Media Agency, which funds RFE/RL. The network’s president, Stephen Capus, warned that cutting support would benefit America’s adversaries.

The Czech Republic, where RFE/RL has operated for 25 years, is leading the effort to secure new funding. Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský has urged the EU to intervene. Sweden also supports financing the network, emphasizing its importance for democracy. However, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said securing funding would be difficult, as many organizations require financial aid. However, EU ministers are determined to find a solution to keep RFE/RL operating.

Difficult words: adversary (an enemy), intervene (to take action to help), determined (firmly decided).
