Norovirus in the US – level 3

03-01-2025 15:00

Norovirus, also called the winter vomiting disease, is a very infectious virus. It causes symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain.

The CDC reports that recent cases have risen sharply in the US, with 91 cases recorded in early December, nearly three times the weekly average between 2021 and 2024. Although it usually clears up quickly, it can be dangerous for infants or the elderly due to dehydration. To avoid catching norovirus, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, as alcohol-based sanitizers are ineffective. Be careful when preparing food and sanitize surfaces. You might remain contagious for a few days after symptoms stop.

Other respiratory viruses, such as flu, COVID-19, and RSV, are also spreading. Vaccinations are available for all three, with specific recommendations for children, pregnant people, and older adults. Masks and testing help reduce risk, especially for vulnerable groups.

Difficult words: dehydration (loss of too much water from the body), sanitizer (special liquid or gel that cleans hands), contagious (able to spread from one person to another), vulnerable group (people who are easily harmed or affected).
