Racist text messages – level 3

12-11-2024 15:00

A recent surge in anonymous, racist messages is raising alarm across the United States.

Authorities are investigating the disturbing texts, which were sent to Black Americans in multiple states. These messages, referencing plantation labor, make offensive connections to slavery and use ethnic slurs, with one message targeting Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill directly. Public figures and private citizens have reported receiving the texts, with some responses showing frustration and anger. Atlanta publicist Monae Miller, one of the recipients, shared how she tried to reply to the sender only to find the number was fake. Many recipients feel anxious about the texts, which they interpret as hateful and threatening.

As racial and political tensions remain high, Black Americans and activists are urging peace and unity in response to these incidents.

Difficult words: alarm (nervousness or fear), disturbing (worrying), slur (insulting words about someone’s race or background).

Who was one of the public figures directly targeted by the racist messages and how have recipients generally reacted to these texts?
