Syrian president leaves Damascus – level 2
10-12-2024 15:00
President Bashar al-Assad of Syria left Damascus after rebels entered the city without much fighting.
The rebels announced that Damascus is now free from Assad’s control. This happened just two weeks after they started their attacks in northern Syria. According to reports, the Syrian army told officers the regime fell. Prime Minister Mohammed al-Jal-Ali said he would help with a peaceful change of power. The Syrian people will choose the new leader. The rebels freed prisoners and met little opposition from the soldiers. Many Syrian soldiers ran away or crossed the border into Iraq.
Assad’s location is unknown, and rebels now need to decide who will lead the country next. This is a big change after 24 years of Assad’s rule.
Difficult words: rebel (a person who fights against the government), regime (a government), opposition (a conflict, or fight).
