Syrian president leaves Damascus – level 3

10-12-2024 15:00

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has fled Damascus as rebel forces entered the city, ending decades of his rule.

The insurgents declared Damascus free just two weeks after a rapid offensive that began in northern Syria. According to reports, the Syrian army notified officers of the regime’s collapse. Prime Minister Mohammed al-Jal-Ali announced he was ready to support a peaceful transfer of power to a leader chosen by the people. The rebels, advancing from multiple directions, freed prisoners and encountered minimal opposition. Many Syrian soldiers retreated or fled to Iraq. Assad’s whereabouts remain unknown, but reports indicate he left the capital. The situation marks a dramatic and rapid change after 24 years of Assad’s leadership.

Now, rebel groups will organize and select new leadership. This moment begins a new chapter for Syria, with hopes for stability after years of conflict.

Difficult words: insurgent (a person who fights against a government), retreat (moving back or withdrawing), whereabouts (the place where someone or something is).
